Saw this rat in town, 3 O’clock-ish, just sat there, on the kerb with its’ eyes closed. Dunno if it was dieing or just taking a break. Probably dieing cos it’d never be catching 40 winks out in the open otherwise.

MP Richard Bacon of the public accounts commitee into the privatisation of the Defence Evaluation and Research Agency (DERA, which became QinetiQ) questions Trevor Woolley of the MOD:

Bacon: “Mr Woolley, are you a chartered accountant?”

Woolley: “I am not.”

Bacon: “Are you a qualified financial person of any kind? Do you have any financial qualifications?”

Woolley: “I do not have financial qualifications.”

Bacon: “What is your job?”

Woolley: “I am the finance director of the Ministry of Defence.”

Pakistani former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto has been assassinated in a suicide attack.
Ms Bhutto – the first woman PM in an Islamic state – was leaving an election rally in Rawalpindi when a gunman shot her in the neck and set off a bomb.

I saw this last night, bit of a surprise, seeing as I haven’t seen the news for days, and then the first thing I see is something major like this.
I can’t say I am an expert on Pakistani politics, and I don’t think would have voted for her, but I think Pakistan will be poorer for her death and will take longer to settle down in the long run.

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert met Thursday with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in an attempt to solve the so-called settlement crisis that has plagued negotiations since the Annapolis summit late last month.

The key bone of contention between the two sides is Israel’s continued construction in the settlements. The Palestinians are particularly upset over a tender by the Housing Ministry for the construction of 307 housing units in the southeast Jerusalem neighborhood of Har Homa, on the Palestinian side of the Green Line.

Crisis? Stopping building on Palestinian land should solve that crisis, eh?

Prime Minister Gordon Brown will oppose an above inflation pay rise for MPs, according to Downing Street sources.

Reports suggest the Senior Salaries Review body has recommended a rise of nearly 1% above inflation.

Mr Brown is said to oppose this, but some MPs say their pay has fallen behind. MPs will have the final say in the Commons.

It’d be a bit rich for MPs’ to go ahead with an above inflation pay rise after asking the police to do so.
Especially when you think about how many MPs that can’t afford to by their own home.
